Food & Love: Steak Ala Pobre

Welcome to Food & Love! I started this series to document my culinary journey as I try to improve my kitchen skills. I’ll be sharing with you some quick and easy recipes. I’ll try to cook or bake these recipes, and hopefully make something edible for my hubby.

It’s my day off. And, I spent the whole day catching up with household chores. I know, it sounds like a pretty boring day. But I’m glad that I was able to clean the house, do the laundry, and organize my closet.

It was around 5 pm when I realized that I have nothing planned for dinner. I wasn’t able to go to the grocery store and the fridge is practically empty… except for a beautiful slab of  New York Sirloin Steak!

My husband came home exhausted from work, so I told him to rest while I cook dinner.

“What’s for dinner?” he asked.

“Let me surprise you…” I answered.

The truth was I didn’t know what to do with the steak. So, I grabbed my secret weapon – Kitchen Tested Recipes written by Mila Aujero.

Ma’am Mila, as we fondly call her, was my Home Economics teacher when I was in high school. Last December, she saw a photo of my first “successful” Dutch Apple Pie on Facebook. She learned about my culinary journey, and she graciously gave me a copy of her book.

And, that’s where I found this mouth-watering Steak Ala Pobre recipe.


Steak Ala Pobre

  • 1/2 kilo tenderloin steak
  • 2 calamansi
  • 2 tbsp. soy sauce
  • minced garlic
  • cooking oil
  • seasoning to taste
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup



1. Marinate steak in calamansi, soy sauce, and seasoning to taste.

2. Fry in butter or hot oil.

3. Place in a pan, add cream of mushroom and bake for 30 mins.

4. Top and sprinkle with fried garlic. Serve.


Steak Ala Pobres


I utilized the ingredients that I already have on hand: New York steak, soy sauce, and Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup. I don’t have any calamansi (calamondin or Philippine lime), so I replaced it with white vinegar. 

The Steak Ala Pobre turned out really good and my husband loved it! I’m glad that I found this recipe. It’s a simple dinner solution that’s so easy to make.

    1. Hi Alice, thank you for reading and pinning. Calamansi is widely used in the Philippines. I have yet to discover where to get it in the US. I’ve read that the Seafood City chain in California carries fresh calamansi. Key lime or lemon are also good substitutes for this fruit.
